WASHINGTON (March 28, 2023) – Today, as part of the 2023 Summit for Democracy, the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) hosted an official event with leaders from the governments and civil society in The Gambia and Côte d’Ivoire.
During the event, MCC CEO Alice Albright noted “Built into MCC’s model is a profound respect for democracy and acknowledgement that good and accountable governance is important in helping countries deliver for their people… A core principle of our approach to development is country ownership. MCC helps democratic governments deliver tangible results for their people based on their needs and aspirations. Civil society plays a critical role in this process. This panel is a celebration and manifestation of democracy.”
NED Chairman Ken Wollack added, “The National Endowment for Democracy is committed to supporting opportunities that create common cause among citizens, government, and democratic institutions. The Endowment is proud to support leaders like Marr Nyang and Dr. Flan, and countless others like them around the world, as they give voice to citizens and advance rights, freedoms, and accountability.”
In addition to MCC CEO Albright and NED Chairman Wollack, the event featured the following speakers:
- His Excellency Adama Barrow, President of The Republic of The Gambia;
- His Excellency Patrick Achi, Prime Minister of The Republic of Cote d’Ivoire;
- Flan Moquet César, Founder and Director of the Center for Political Research of Abidjan; and,
- Marr Nyang, Founder and Executive Director of Gambia Participates.
During the discussion, panelists highlighted the importance of transparent and accountable governance and the importance of having strong democratic institutions that can effectively respond to and deliver on citizens’ demands. Speakers called for a holistic and coordinated approach to tackling development issues, noting that the efforts of economic growth and democracy are mutually reinforcing and help bolster countries’ democratic resilience.
This was an official event held on the Thematic Day of the White House’s 2023 Summit for Democracy.
